On the Trail: A Journey Through California's Wild Beauty and Challenges
I've always believed that hiking is more than just putting one foot in front of the other; it's a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and an ever-changing landscape. And California, with its diverse terrain and unpredictable weather, is a state that demands respect and perseverance from those who dare to traverse its trails.
Embracing the Unexpected
The day after a much-needed break in Etna, we hit the trail with renewed energy. The rain, a welcome change from the relentless heat, transformed the mountains and forests into a lush, vibrant scene. It's fascinating how a shift in weather can completely alter one's perception of a place. The Marble Mountains, with their pale rock and serene lakes, offered a breathtaking backdrop to our hike. But as we soon discovered, California had more surprises in store.
Pushing the Limits
One thing that immediately stands out about our journey is the constant challenge of exceeding our own expectations. We had planned for 25 miles, but ended up covering nearly 30. This pattern of pushing ourselves further became a familiar one. It's a testament to the human spirit and the desire to explore, even when our bodies cry for rest. The campsite near Kelsey Creek, with its alpacas and unique scenery, was a well-earned reward.
Navigating the Obstacles
California's trails, like life itself, are filled with obstacles. From deer with peculiar habits to a leaky sleeping pad, these challenges add a layer of unpredictability to our adventure. The climb out of Seiad Valley, rumored to be a monster, was a true test of our endurance. Yet, after all we had endured, it felt like just another climb. California's final test, an 8,667-foot elevation gain, pushed us to our limits, but it was the trail's way of preparing us for what lay ahead.

The kindness of Amber and Erica, keeping the tradition of trail magic alive, and the camaraderie with fellow hikers at Wildwood RV Park, are heartwarming. Reaching the California-Oregon border on Day 100 was a significant milestone. It marked the end of a challenging yet rewarding journey through California. The state had given us a taste of everything, from extreme weather to breathtaking landscapes. Personally, I think it's these milestones that keep us going, providing a sense of accomplishment and a chance to reflect on the journey thus far.

Stepping into Oregon felt like turning a page in our adventure. The trail, remarkably well-maintained, offered a smooth walking experience, a stark contrast to California's rugged terrain.
