New Jersey's largest water utility is seeking a 12% increase in water bills for 2.9 million customers, citing the need for a $1.4 billion infrastructure upgrade. The proposal, announced on Wednesday, includes a $10 monthly increase in residential water bills and an $8 monthly increase in wastewater charges. The utility aims to replace aging pipes, remove contaminants like PFAS, and enhance water quality and reliability. The proposed rate hike comes at a critical time, as Governor Mikie Sherrill has pledged to address rising utility costs through executive orders. The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) will hold a formal hearing to gather public feedback, with no date set yet. Additionally, the utility plans to extend monthly water bill discounts to customers already receiving assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program or the Universal Service Fund, promoting affordability for low-income households. The company will also pass along refunds from the state's gross receipts tax as billing credits, ensuring customers benefit from tax-related savings.
