Broadcast in 1979, it captivated 500 million viewers worldwide, solidifying David's status as the preeminent wildlife filmmaker of his generation. His iconic encounter with gorillas in Rwanda for this series is still frequently cited as one of the most memorable TV moments ever. This 1x60’ special for BBC One and iPlayer is a production of BBC Studios Natural History Unit, co-produced by PBS.
The Secret Lives in Our Backyards
Following his explorations of the British countryside and urban landscapes, David Attenborough now turns his gaze to our gardens in the new 5x60’ series, Secret Garden. This series, for BBC One and iPlayer, will reveal the often-charming, sometimes daring, and always secretive lives of animals inhabiting the hidden worlds right on our doorsteps. And this is the part most people miss... Their existence isn't always cosy; even in seemingly tranquil gardens, the raw rules of the wild still apply. From pine martens in the Scottish Highlands to dormice in Wales, swallows in the Lake District to otters in Oxfordshire, and blue tits in Bristol, the series showcases an incredible diversity of life and how these species coexist with us. The series also highlights how our gardens, which collectively cover an area larger than all our national nature reserves, can play a crucial role in supporting struggling species. This production is by Plimsoll Productions, part of ITV Studios, with co-production by The Open University and The National Trust.
